Mermaid/Under the Sea/Ocean Birthday Party Decorating Ideas
For the 4th birthday of my daughter, we had a
Mermaid Themed Party
and decorated the place to resemble an Under the Ocean scene.
Color Scheme:
As is always the first step when decorating for a theme party, we
picked out a color scheme. Since the theme of our party was
'Disney's Little Mermaid Ariel', our colors were blue, green and
purple.
Entrance:
A canopy filled with streamers all in blue, green and purple
served as an entrance. Guests walked in through the streamers
and entered the party area.
Backdrop:
A large blue cloth curtain formed the backdrop of the ocean. Two
towers of balloons flanked the curtain on both sides. Making the
sea look real were helium balloons in the shape of fishes and
other aquatic animals and a mermaid. Decorative elements in the
shape of 'Coral' was cut out of foam and attached to the
backdrop curtain as well as many other places in the party area.
Treasure Chest:
The little mermaid Ariel is famous for collecting 'treasures'. A
treasure chest was created out of foam and was one of the
activities at the party. The chest was filled with prizes, sea
animal shaped foam beads, sea shells and a lot of 'garbage'
(waste wrapping paper, streamers etc. Guests were given loot
bags and had to dive in together to find their treasures. A
great alternative to the piñata!
The Octopus perched atop the treasure chest is an inflatable party
game. Guests had to throw in rings inside the tentacles to earn
points.
The Mermaid's Shell
The mermaid had to have a picture sitting inside a shell in all
her pretty finery and that gave birth to the idea of a 'shell'
decoration.
The shell was created from a large piece of sturdy foam and was
placed atop a large flat box containing sand. Blue fabric
encircled the shell in the form of water. A makeshift fabric
cushion on the sand protected the mermaid's clothes from getting
dirty.
Decorating:
Balloons in the chosen color scheme dotted the party area.
